Rules on the Street That Can Save Your French Bulldog's Life

Going out with your French bulldog is a fun thing and most people wait for all day to get home and take out their dogs. The same goes with your Frenchie they love to round outside with their owner. However, their curious nature and small size are what make them prone to many dangers when they are out in the streets. As a responsible pet owner, you should be aware of the potential risks outside and follow the specific rules that can protect your French bulldog's life. In this blog, we will discuss some street safety tips that can help in saving your French bulldog's life.

1. Use a Secure and Comfortable Harness

The first thing that can protect your pup is a comfortable and secure harness instead of a collar. French bulldogs have brachycephalic faces and delicate necks that make them prone to different health and respiratory issues. If you use a collar it will put unnecessary pressure on their neck when they pull on the leash. When you use a well-fitted harness the pressure will be distributed across the shoulder and chest and decreases the risk of injury.

When you select the harness make sure it’s fit snugly but not too tight. Make sure that it lets your dog move freely but they cannot slip out of it. If you walk during light hours then select the harness with reflective strips.

All these qualities are present in the Astronaut Frenchie Harness. It also has a dual D ring so you can attach the leash on the front and back.

2. Keep Your French Bulldog on a Leash at All Times

It’s important to keep your French bulldog on a leash no matter how well-trained they are. Frenchies have a curious and playful nature and if something catches their interest like another dog or squirrel they will run after it unexpectedly. This can put them in dangerous positions including getting lost or hit by a vehicle.

Choose a leash that is durable and of appropriate length from 4 to 6 feet. This will you maintain control and also give you enough space to your to explore the surroundings.

3. Be Aware of Traffic and Street Hazards

When you are taking your pup out please stay alert of your surroundings. All the streets are full of bicycles, vehicles, and pedestrians. Always walk on the sidewalk area and keep your pup away from the main road. If you want to move across the street look for the obvious dangers like sharp objects, broken glass, and different toxic substances. If our Frenchie wants to sniff something gently move them away.

4. Avoid Overheating and Dehydration

French bulldogs can also suffer from heating because of their brachycephalic nature. They have short airways so it's difficult for them to cool down through panting. When taking them out avoid the hottest part of the and take them out in the early morning or late evening.

When you are going out always keep a water bottle with yourself during the walk. If you feel that your Frenchie is panting or drooling excessively and they are in some kind of distress then find a shaded and give them water.

5. Train Your French Bulldog with Basic Commands

Your French bulldog should be well trained on commands as it can save their life from a lot of dangers. Commands like ‘stay”, “come”, “sit”, and “leave it” are important commands in controlling the behavior of your Frenchie on the street. For example, if your pup is on the road and he is about to pick up something dangerous than a firm “come” or “leave it” commands can prevent any accidents.

The training you provide to your dog is reward-based and consistent. It will take time to train your Frenchie so patience is the key to making sure that your dog will obey your command on a busy and stressful street.

6. Be Mindful of Other Animals and People

Not all French bulldogs feel good while having encounters with other people and animals. Your Frenchie might behave friendly with some dogs but might be afraid of other dogs. Don’t let your dog near another dog without permission. It is also important to notice any sign of discomfort or aggression like stiff body language, and growling, and deal with your dog accordingly.

Another thing is to be aware of other dogs when they are off leash as they are not in control of their owner. If an off-leash dog is approaching your dog and feels like a threat calmly move to another direction.

7. Protect Your French Bulldog from Harsh Weather Conditions

Weather plays an important role in keeping your dog safe on the street. French bulldogs are sensitive to both heat and cold. In extremely hot weather conditions do not let your dog out in the hotter times and take them out in the early morning and evening time. Always walk in the shaded area and check their paws regularly.

Similarly, in winter protect your dog from snow and salt by wearing them boots. Be mindful of frostbite on the paw, tail, and ears.

8. Stay Visible and Alert During Night Walks

When walking your Frenchie in the early morning or late night take extra precautions. In case of low visibility the rate of accidents will increase, so try to stay visible to cyclists and drivers. Use reflective gear for your dog and yourself like a harness, leash, or even a collar.

Walk in the well-lit area and avoid walking in the dark places. Keep a flashlight in your hand to improve visibility and to see potential hazards from a distance. Try to avoid distractions while walking like using the phone and keep your eyes on the road to prevent accidents.

Conclusion

Owning a French bulldog comes with a lot of responsibility especially when you take them out in the street. Remember that little precaution and safeguarding your dog will increase their life. If you have the awareness and take the right action you can make sure that every walk is enjoyable for both you and your pet.
