The French bulldog is an attractive species, and one of its beautiful parts is its ears. The ears are usually shaped like those of the bats. Although some have floppy ears too there is no need for you to worry about it.
There are many French bulldog ear problems that you should know of if you want to train your Frenchie without any hiccups. Sometimes French bulldog ears appear to fall forward or curl backward. In order to prevent this from happening, you may have to clean their ears routinely to ensure that it doesn’t get infected.
Apart from having floppy ears, their ears can also itch or have some yellowish fluid discharge.
You should not be worried if your French bulldog ear never goes up. At the early stages of their life, not all French bulldogs had a standing ear. There are no fixed time frames to having a standing up ear for every sub-breed of French bulldog, they all have different timing for this. In all you do, you should not be worried. The ears will begin to stand at the 15th week or before the 7th month.
Once your Frenchie has finished with developing dentition, its ears will eventually stand up. All French Bulldogs ought to have a standing ear except for a few exceptions here and there. Irrespective of the age, they all finally get to have a standing ear.
The chance that your Frenchie will not have a standing ear is 10%.
There are a few things you can do to help your Frenchie have a stood up ear. If the ear does not stand when they get to the age of 7 months, there are a few things you can do to help get the desired ear. You can tape their ears; as this helps the ear grow in the taped direction.
To do this, you will have to use a 1.5-inch tape around each ear. While doing this, you should ensure that the ear is taped correctly and kept from the crinkled looking base. The ears can be arranged in the top in a way that would make it look erect. The tape should be left in the ears for a minimum of five days.
While removing the tape, do so carefully to avoid bruising the ear. Eating any particular food will not help the ear of the Frenchie to be erect. But feeding them with yogurt when they are teething has a way of improving their bone structure and gives them a chance to have erect ears.
Other concerns
While training your Frenchie, you can find situations where its ears are standing straight up today, but down the next day. There are other times when you notice that the tops of their ears are floppy and not pointed. All these are perfectly normal and have nothing to do with the health of your Frenchie.
One thing is for sure when the ears are not erect at the eight-month, they may never become erect, and this is also normal.
